The Smiling Coast of Africa

Kolili’s beach …, 2min walking distance from Calabash Residence

The Gambia, the smallest country in Africa, surprises with its diversity. Here, where the Gambia River meanders leisurely through mangroves, golden beaches merge with the rhythm of African drums. In the fishing villages, the catch of the day is traded directly on the beach, while colourful markets present exotic fruits and handmade works of art. The warmth of the locals is omnipresent and the ‘smiling coast of Africa’ lives up to its promise. From bird watching in the wetlands to relaxed boat trips on the river, The Gambia offers an authentic African experience.

The Kololi party district

Gambia’s vibrant tourist centre, attracts visitors with its golden beaches and African joie de vivre. Here, relaxed beach days merge with lively evenings in bars and restaurants. The famous ‘Senegambia Strip’ pulsates with music and markets. Kololi offers a wide range of accommodation, from luxurious resorts to cosy guesthouses. An ideal place to experience ‘The Smiling Coast of Africa’ live.

This is the amazing ‘Calabash’ tree:

Calabash fruit is healthy and offers some nutritional benefits, what is not famous in Gambia, but in some parts of West Africa. However, it is important to distinguish between the edible variety (not known and found in Gambia, but it’s called ‘bottle gourd’ or Lagenaria siceraria) and the so-called calabash tree fruit (Crescentia cujete), which is not suitable for consumption. These rather large and hard shells are widely used in West Africa, in catering or even by families and … they can even be used to make musical instruments. Specially in Gambia they use it particular, the Calabash shells are used a lot, which is very environmentally friendly. Tonnes of plastic are avoided if more Calabash bowls are used…
